From Design to Development: Behind the Scenes of Creating My Agenda Project

Creating a physical agenda is more than just putting pages together. It involves careful planning, design, material selection, and even building a companion app to enhance the user experience. Over the past two weeks, significant progress has been made on this project, moving from initial concepts to tangible steps toward production. This post shares the journey behind the scenes, highlighting key stages like finalizing the agenda’s interior design, choosing materials, designing separators, and collaborating on the app development.

Finalizing the Agenda Interior Design

The heart of any agenda is its inside layout. This project required a design that balances functionality with aesthetics. After multiple iterations, the interior design is now complete and ready to be sent to a printer for a quote. This step is crucial because it helps determine printing costs and feasibility.

The design includes:

• Monthly and weekly planning pages with clear, easy-to-read fonts

• Pages for annual goal setting and reflection

• Consistent use of color to differentiate sections without overwhelming the user

  
  

The goal was to create a layout that feels intuitive and encourages daily use. The design also considers paper size and margins to ensure the final product looks polished and professional.

Selecting Materials for the Physical Product

Choosing the right materials is essential to create a durable and pleasant-to-use agenda. The materials list was finalized after researching options that balance quality and cost. Key considerations included:

• Paper type: Opted for thick, smooth paper that prevents ink bleed and feels premium

• Cover material: Selected a sturdy hard cover that protects the pages and feels comfortable to hold

• Binding method: Chose a binding style that allows the agenda to lay flat when open, improving usability

  
  

This careful selection ensures the agenda will withstand daily handling while maintaining an attractive appearance.

Designing Separator Pages for Monthly Sections

To help users navigate the agenda easily, separator pages were designed to mark the start of each month. These pages serve both a functional and decorative purpose. The design approach focused on:

• Clear, bold month names for quick identification

• Zen inspired graphics that evoke calm feelings and reflection

• Consistent color themes that match the interior design palette

• Phrases that empower the user as they begin a new month

  
  

These separators add a visual break and improve organization, making the agenda more user-friendly.

Collaborating on the Companion App Development

I decided to enhance the agenda's usefulness with a companion app that is being developed alongside the physical agenda. Working closely with a developer, the app is taking shape with features that sync with the agenda’s layout.

Current progress includes:

• A calendar page that can automatically import events into the user's Google or Apple calendar

• A books page that helps the reader keep track of the book they have read or are planning to read this year

• A habits pages that includes a habit tracker, streak counting, etc

• A goals page that breaks down each goal into small steps

• A gratitude page that acts as a digital gratitude journal

• A meditation page that has prompts for meditation, a timer that can count up or down, and a spot to play sounds for meditation (I still need to select the specific sounds)

• An affirmations page that allows the user to record positive affirmations and listen to them back in their own voice

What’s Next for the Project

The next step will be to finish the designs for the dividers and the covers. Meanwhile, app development will continue, focusing on adding features and improving usability based on feedback.
